Self-improvement jar

Similar version of a 'swear' jar. Except that you are the one paying for it instead of someone else.

Remember when you were a child and someone swear in front of you and you tell them to drop 10p into the swear jar as a reminder never to swear again?

Well, self-improvement jar works the same way except that you use it as a mean to improve yourself.

I remember when I was in my first year of university, My conversation was filled with Malaysian slangs and it got a wee bit annoyed because my friends had difficulty understanding me. I tried to improve but with lots of difficulty due to my upbringing. I seriously wanted to be better so I decided to implement the 'broken English' jar. Every time I caught myself speaking with Malaysian slang, I will have to drop 10p into the jar. The money in the jar will then goes to charity. By mid-2nd year, my jar was completely empty all throughout and I even surprised myself with proper British English.

My motto is this: "If I can do it, anybody can do it!" and the same vice versa

We just need the determination, honesty, integrity, and willingness to make it works wonders.

That's why I thought I might want to come up with variety of self-improvement jar to keep improving myself.

I know most people won't be bothered by it. In fact, they might laugh over how naive the idea is... That's fine. I am changing and improving myself - not them. I am making myself a better person - not them. They can stay behind if that's what they want - I'll just keep moving forward. After all, it is my life and my race. Nobody can run my race for me except myself. So it's best I focus on improving myself and keep running my own race. But if anybody wants to join me, I'll be happy to share my tips and tricks with you.

As a Christian, there are so many fruits of the Spirit that we need to attempt in order to be like Jesus.

Galatians 5:22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

I possessed some of them but lack of so many others. I know it's hard to change and I really do want to change for goodness-sake.There are some part of me that, if not careful, can ruin my entire life and my relationship with people.

There are also many other characters and personality that the bible verse did not mentioned and I should head up as well; so that every single moment of my life, I can and I WILL become a better person. I do not want to wait for people to tell me things because 1) I am an adult and I should be expected to know the do's and don't's and 2) it will be extremely embarrassing if I constantly required telling off every single time.

So I came up with the idea of implementing a 'self-improvement/ Fruit of the Spirit' jar with all the characteristic of the fruit of the spirit. Every time I catch myself hating someone for whatever the reason, I will have to put in 10p into the jar. Every time I kick a fuss because I cannot get things my way, another 10p into the jar. Every time I get impatient over things, another 10p into the jar... Eventually the jar will be full and the money will go straight to charity.

By the time the amount of money in the jar dropped significantly, we know that I am improving.

To me, this is the perfect way to train oneself; because I believe that all of us have the desire to improve in every aspect possible. But self-improvement is so subjective that we cannot really see the changes in us that's why most of us gave up midway. We have nobody to tell us things/ we don't want people to know that we need to change and etc. So in order to help ourselves to get an idea of our personal development, the 'self-improvement' jar will serve as a perfect visual cue to our overall refinement.

Negative thoughts counted too. So please cease out the fear, anxiety and former negative thoughts. They should be 10p apiece too. And I am glad to say that I haven't put in a single pence yet although I will soon find myself filling it up in no time - because negative thought is my worst enemy.

Well, hopefully in a year or two, I will be a complete changed person and the jar will be empty for the rest of my life. (And yes, this is obviously going to be my lifetime jar.) I can change the jar anytime I want, but the purpose has to remain the same forever. That way I can lead a purposeful life that is completely filled with the Fruits of the Spirit.

Note: Feel free to create your own rules to live by. If you think you lie more than your liking because it has become a habit, then include that. if you think you are rude to someone because it just happened spontaneously and has become part of your natural reaction, then include it as well. Honestly, it is your choice of how and what you want to change in yourself.

As for myself: It is to completely case-out all my weaknesses and seriously develop a stringent positive traits that is to the Fruit of the Spirit because I find it rather disturbing when people avoid me without telling me why; and then later I learn that it is due to my negative traits that ruin my relationship with others. It hurts because I didn't expect to lose my friendship just like that; but there is no blaming others for my own fault. So in order to keep all my current and future relationships, it's best I do something with myself rather than expecting other people to be patient with me. Honestly speaking, even the most patient person will one day reach their wit-end. So best is NOT to get there at all! And in order not to get to their nerves, the best thing is to do something to change myself completely so that I can easily avoid unwanted trouble again; because let's say: 90% of the time, the problem did come from my side after all. So why not admit it and change it for the better?

Self-control

In all we do...
There is one fruit that represent us...
The 'doing'...
Our self-control....

Anger is dominating the world day by day...
We face angry people almost everyday in life...

People get angry for some reasons...
We may or may not know why...
But rather than allowing it to rule us...
We can do a lot better than raging in return...

We can just be in control of ourselves...

As what a good saying goes

"Self-control is the only way to survive in the world full of idiots."

Don't let anger control you, my friend...
Control anger and be nice to others...

We shouldn't let other people's foolish get into our nerves...
If we did,
We are in trouble...
Because then, we are the one out of control...

So be in control of yourself...
Tighten your self-control...

If someone accused you for something that you didn't do,
Just gently tell them the truth and walked away...
But do not even shout/ scream in defence...
Your voice/ tone/ word doesn't help you...
But rather,
Be positive and say it positively with a gentle tone...
They may not perceive you but at least, you have clear your part of...

But if you have done something wrong and someone screamed at you,
Just meekly apologised and correct it.
People who have conscious knew that you have repented will automatically stop nagging at you.
But if those nagging doesn't stop,
Remember,
It is NOT your fault...
It is the nagger's fault...
Because she was desperately looking for something to unleash her tongue...
Therefore do not worry...
One day she will get a slap on the face by someone who is much worst than herself...
Then she will learn to have self-control in all aspect...
But you do not have to respond rudely as revenge...
Just walk away and let nature take care of it for you...

Self-control....
You can do so much better just by smiling politely and swiftly walked off without much word.
You can also do a lot better with just a sense of gentleness...
So much so,
People who have sudden outburst will repent on their own shameful behaviour...
You don't have to tell them anything nor say the word...
Your action will do the job...

Be in self-control...
It worth so much the trouble...
And gain all the peace that your heart desires of a lifetime...
In fact,
It saves your life till the very end...

You are beautiful...

I woke up this morning...
And the first word that I heard out of nowhere is this...

"You are beautiful..."

No, I am all alone in the room.
I am a happy one-person room settler...
But to be told of such thing the moment I wake up is just so bizarre....

Humans aren't always good at saying "You are beautiful" to me when I woke up with a messy-bed hair and bad breath...
And I don't even bother about it at all because I knew that I don't deserve it until I get myself thoroughly clean and pretty-looking for such compliment...

But what amazed me is that...
The inner voice that said is out of nowhere just enlightened me...
I turned around searching for the source but failed..
Then it came again...

"You are beautiful just as you are..."

"It's good to be clean and nice smelling;
Adorning with skirts and tiara like a royal princess should be...
But do not think for one second that you should picture-perfect be...

Measure your heart, my dearest...
Measure your heart...
Be kind... Be gentle... Be humble... Be loving and be compassionate...
That's the key to your true beauty...

Feel free to dance and swirl in circles, my daughter...
Sing and play as you wish,
Laugh, smile and be joyful,
All to your dearest heart content...

Do that split jump that you always wanted to do,
Freely swirl in circle and allowed yourself to fall on the ground with laughter..
Grab the violin and bow a tune that you have in your head...
Or sing whatever songs you know by heart...
Or just play some snatches of music to your favourite instruments...

You are gifted from the get-go...
You are born creative...
Born to move and dance and charm the world...
Born to smile and warm the hardest heart and the coolest stare...
Born to love abundantly... So much so, there is love at your heel...

The world need more smile and laughter, my girl...
Be the world...
Be the world of such smile, laughter, joy and happiness.
Be the world of dance and music...
Be the world...
And be beautiful...

For you are beautiful - princess..."

I smiled...
Jeans and shorts...
They were once-a-upon my favourite...
And I still have it for home wear...
But now, I am looking into skirts and girly stuffs...

Shall I wear a pink skirt or the blue one? Or the peach one?
Stretching my head, I knew that whichever one I wear will be great...
Because if they don't suit me at all, they will not be in my collection...

The hair-bow...
Beautiful pink polka dots on my ponytail...
Or shall I go for blue or the purple one?
Hmmm....
What a choice!

For the first time,
I feel the true girly-girl energy soaring out of me....
And then crazily went for a wee swirl to reveal my true feminism...

But I know that the Father loves His daughter more than her clothes...
He loves her for her inner soul...
The little spirit that outreach and love others...
The girl that said, "Daddy, let's drop a couple of coins into the beggar's cup."
Or "let's feed the homeless..."
Or "let's right those wrong and be kind to others again..."

That's what our Father in Heaven wants to see from each one of us...
To be kind and compassionate to those in need....

Let's be beautiful from the inside out...

Let's see who need help...

"Hello, how may I help you?"

Count your blessing...

It is the little thing that matters...

Do you have food on the table?
If you do, give thanks...
There are people from the third-world country who are starving without a piece of rice/ string of noodle on their plate...

Do you have clothes to wear and change?
If you do,
You are luckier than those who only have clothes that are much shorter than themselves...

Do you have roof above your head?
If you do,
You are so much more fortunate than those who has to endure under the weather like plants in the garden

Do you have someone to say 'I love You' every night before bedtime?
If you do, please count your blessing for every single second that word is murmured to your heart...
Some people are dying to hear that for the last time before they take their last breath!

Count your blessing...
Stop complaining...
Things don't change when you grumble...
So, learn to enjoy what is good in those hard time...

Life is a gift...

Out of zillions sperms, only one survive to become a human.
Will that helps you to know that you are only of the luckiest sperm that got to become a human?
Will it helps you to know that you're the CHOSEN one?

i personally believe that each one of us are very lucky to be on earth...
To have so many things in life...
To have good food to eat..
To have beautiful clothes to wear...
To have a house to call our own
And to have someone to love you abundantly...

That is a blessing to each one of us...

So,
Please keep counting your blessing...

Discovering the real you....

In another word...
Be who you truly are...

Cook if you love to,
Dance if that is what your heart desires...
Play a musical instrument if that's what your soul calls for...
Create and/ or make something new everyday...

We are called to be creative and happy...
While we are also taught to refine our personality...

There is nothing wrong with making new things everyday...
It is just the way we are made to be...

That's where you get to see how unique each and everyone of us are...

You can be one with the world...
Or one with yourself..
Either way, it's perfectly fine...
After all, we are made to be different...

So don't expect people to change for your sake...
Because they will not unless they want to - for their sake...

So be nice about it...
Be acceptance about the reality...
Do whatever makes you truly happy
And share that happiness with others...

True love...

This message hit me…
While I was busy window shopping…

“A firm loving relationship can endure all obstacles set ahead of them…
Nothing can banish it regardless to the velocity of barriers…
When you say “You are mine - forever…”
Will that really means everlasting?
How far can you really go to fulfil your words?
How can you ensure you stay romantically in relationship forever?”

I learn that,
To be in an everlasting relationship…
We need to put in effort into order to make it work…
It is impossible to have one party giving all the way and the other one receiving only…
I don’t believe in that…
Because if that is the case,
Sooner or later,
The relationship will collapse…

I believe that no matter what kind of relationship we are in,
Communication is the most important factor of all…
If we don’t want to understand each other;
Then it will be difficult for us to be friends much less to be a lifetime partner…
However,
If you allowed that person to be your friend but no more than that…
There is still a boundary between both of you…
Then it is impossible to go further…

It is very normal to be afraid at times…
Especially when it comes to a life-changing experience like being in a relationship…

Being in a relationship can be a real challenge…
It is a lifetime commitment…
And we have to go the extra miles at all times in order to meet in the middle…
Because no matter how much we love someone,
There is always some difference between us…
That we need to learn how to entwine with it….

Thankfully,
We are not the only one…
Everyone who is in the relationship felt the same anxiety too…
But it is the matter of how we deal with it…

I remembered many years back,
One of my friends said that
She didn’t even know how she got into the relationship…
As in,
She didn’t know how she managed to let the guy enter into her heart…
She only knew that life is entirely different without him by her side…

As for agreeing to be his girlfriend…
It took her some time to accept him…
Partially because,
She doesn’t even know if it is the right thing to do…
She was entire confused and was quite down for some time…
As a very close friend,
I was quite helpless back then…
Until one day she suddenly made up her mind and said,
She agree to be with him…

Just like her,
I was also confused with the whole situation…
I also wonder whether she is doing the right thing…
As a friend,
I don’t want her to be hurt in case of a wrong decision…
But at the same time blessed her with a loving heart.

Now,
As I grow mature,
I understand that agreeing to be someone’s lifetime partner is a very stressful thing…
Half a time we wonder whether that person is really the one for us…
I know that some people just agree for the sake of ‘wanting to have a partner’
But the serious ones fear of making the wrong choice…
Because heartbreak will be so tormenting…

If you ask me about myself,
I am a serious lover…
I will give my all just like I do for my work and performances…
I am not perfect…
But I will always give the very best I can…

And that’s what I learn from the little voice inside me…
"We all have strong desire…
Some may even fall for each other due to lust…
But many fail to maintain the pure spiritual love for each other…
It is just so easy to say that three words, “I love you”
But does your feeling really mean more than the words itself?"

You may wonder why some marriage last forever,
But some break-up after a decade or two…

Well…
Long-lasting relationship requires:
1)    Time – lots of time… including sacrificing 80% of your personal moment. So you have to make sure you are truly comfortable with this person who is going to be in your life 24/7 for the rest of your life. If you feel creepy with his/ her existence – you are heading for disaster…
2)    Patience – you will bound to find flaws in your partner. If you cannot tolerate him/ her, you are heading for destruction – for REAL! Because then, every single day you will be fighting/ arguing over the same issue which will never come to an end until you are separated for good.
3)    Determination – The chase isn’t just for mere dating. Just because you are finally married doesn’t means you can take it easy…no! You still have to keep chasing as if you are going to lose him/ her anytime soon. The chase is on FOREVER! Unless you want the relationship comes to an end.
4)    Trust – you cannot be with someone whom you cannot share your deepest secret with. Especially when that person is going to be your roommate for life. (You don’t know what you might blabber in your sleep! – especially if your partner is a light sleeper and can hear everything…)
5)    Understanding – Everyone of us comes with a baggage. Nobody is completely perfect. So, we must be more than willing to deal with those baggages. The smartest way that I truly learn now is to ‘sleep on it…’
6)    Acceptance – Accept that everyone is different include the person you are with. DON’T ever try to change your partner!!! Your partner is the way s/he is and that’s that. You either take it or leave it. God has taken you the way you are including all your flaws; so don’t be such a horrible witch/ wizard and try to manipulate your poor partner into someone s/he isn’t. (that’s speaking from experience!)

So from here,
You can tell that lifelong relationship requires tremendous work…
You cannot be in a relationship if you are not ready to work hard for it.
It does look fun from the outside…
And it can be on the inside, too…
Except that you need to remember the 6 characteristic to make the relationship long-lasting…

Once you fully embedded into the 6 powerful characteristics,
You will be able to embrace true love…

True love requires you to…
Give your whole self to your partner spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically…
You don’t runaway when your partner is at the lowest…
But rather,
You help them out of their trouble and push them forward so that they can look at life in a new angle…

But you also need to be careful not to fall into the motion of things…
Sometimes,
While helping our partner out, we tend to fall into the desperation trap, too…
So, please remember to take time out and refresh before returning to helping them…
But whatever that situation is:
“Never ever leave them alone to juggle with the problems…”
True love never walk out…
True love stays despite the darkest and lowest moment in life…

Remember:
When you agree to be in a relationship with your chosen one,
You automatically agreed to bond together…
You are meant to be there for each other…
And whatever that person go thru,
You will have to be extremely brave to help them out…

So now you know…
True love has its greatest benefit in life…
But it is also the most challenging relationship ever…
If you and your partner can surpass all the challenges…
You two are definitely made in Heaven!

Just keep loving people...

You cannot love anybody if you don't love God...
You cannot be nice to people if you are wicked to yourselves...

Love people even when they despise you...
Even when they are drawing many walls between you and them...

Life is full of people with lots of hatred...
Life is full of people with lots of grand materialistic achievements but tons of negative emotions...

When you go to the hospital/ hospice,
When you sit by the bedside of someone who is about to die...
Ask them: "What do you wish your life would be?"
They will say... "If only I have more time with my loved ones..."

Life...
It's all about love and relationship....
It's all about being with people and the connection that we are so fond of...

People who are about to die...
They ask for their family members and friends...
People who are so dear to their heart...
People whom they wanted to meet and forgive with all their heart and soul...

There will never once they will ask to see their academic certificate or the material possession...

Nobody... Not the death... will ask to see their precious trophy before they take their last breath...
Instead...
They ask for their family members and friends to stay with them until the very end...

That's love...
True love...
God's love....

Yet,
While we are still living,
We collect more possession than humans' love...
We push our loved ones aside and chase for monetary....
When our loved ones ask for more spending time,
Our frequent response is: "Later...", "Not now...", "Tomorrow" and etc...
So much of all these excuses have got to stop!

I once used to said to a friend:

"What if today... Right now - will be the last time you and I speak to one another? Are you going to tell me to stick to the corner and talk to the wall?

"You don't know what is going to happen to you when you walk out of the place... You have no guarantee that when you cross the road, you will reach the other side safely. You don't know which manic driver might come and knock you off the road. That could be your last breath... and if that ever happen, will you regret not loving and spending more time with people than you would of your possession?"

Just my two pence thoughts.

Also,
When you love people,
You love them unexpectedly and unconditionally...
You love because you want to...
Because it is truly from the very bottom of your heart...

But what happened when they are your enemies?
Do you wish them death?
Do you rejoice when they are gone?
What if your hatred towards them is just you being ultra hateful?

Hateful people are people with problem...
Not the person you hate...
But it is you who are being hateful - got it?

Why choose hate when you could love more?
Why wall them out when you should be breaking barriers?

Many people have issue with their relationship because they think the other party has got a problem...
But what if I were to tell you that...
"YOU are part of  the problem...
YOU are the one that make life worst for them...
And that YOU are the one that need to love them..."

But we always deny our faults...
We keep pushing blame to others...
Just to make ourselves feel better...
When the truth is... We are more wrong than right...

You know the saying: "It takes two to tango..."
When two people are in a relationship,
It is always that two parties' fault;
But never one or the other...
In short to say: it is impossible to blame one person for two people's fault...

E.g: You cannot blame your sister for stealing your dress if you don't know how to hide them from her...
You cannot blame your mum for nagging at your messy room if you have learn to keep your space clean and tidy...

And when you play the blame game...
You also started playing the hate game...
And sooner or later...
There will be more hatred than love in your life...

Many of us love people because we want to get something out of them...
That is where danger comes in...
The truth:
You don't love them...
You are manipulating them...
There is no sincerity in you...

That's why God doesn't like the way we are...
That's why we are called 'sinners'.
We use people for the things we love...
When we are supposed to use things for the people we loves...

Like yourself and many others...

I have people drawing walls around me because they think I am overboard with my affection...
But I'll always say these...

"It doesn't matter what they think of me now - because they are still alive and well... They don't know what they lost... One day when they land on their deathbed, they will realised that they rather have people like myself to show affection to them; than those who keep sucking material possessions out of them - because I don't ask for anything in return except to love people more and more each day...

The last day will come; and when it does, I hope, it will not be too late... because I could have gone before them... For God takes those whom He loves... Those whom He rebuked and discipline. Those whom are earnest and repented... I know I am earnest and I repent every time I sin. Gasp when I made even a wee bit of mistakes in life; and running to God to ask for forgiveness. I fear of God more than any human being. Therefore I am afraid I might go before I am done loving those who needed more love than others."

So start treating people well...
They maybe your enemy on earth...
But they are also servant of God....
The children of God...
Just like you and me...

So love them as God loves you...

As 1 John 4:19 said: "We love because God first loved us."

How Social Media gradually destroying us

Back in 2000, internet began to take the world by storm. Like many other children my age, I was quite tech-savy and was the first in the...
